Current beta availability
The open beta is over. It closed on October 4, 2026 at 6 PM PDT, and the pinned developer FAQ states that test codes and access expire when the window ends. Old beta codes will not start the game today. No new public test had been announced in the material reviewed on October 18.
Some videos uploaded after October 4 still show beta gameplay. An upload date is not evidence that the beta reopened, because creators often publish recordings days later. Stumpt's open beta video, for example, went up on October 7. It shows the test as it was played during the window.
Page titles that say the open beta is live are out of date. The official Steam news page is the place to watch for any future test. If one is announced, we will add it here with the official dates. Until then, the beta is history.
Historical dates and time zone
The beta began on October 1, 2026 at 10 AM PDT. It ended on October 4, 2026 at 6 PM PDT. The official September 30 announcement and the pinned October 1 developer FAQ both give these times. Pacific Daylight Time was the reference time zone.
The beta was announced alongside the Early Access date in a September 20 post titled “Launches 10/21/2026, Open Beta Soon!” That post presented the beta as a separate step before release. PC Gamer's October 1 hands-on report confirms a public test ran that weekend. Its present-tense invitation was only accurate at the time.
The official 360 cinematic trailer, published on October 1, also promoted beta signups. Its description dated the invitation and ended it on October 4. Do not read that trailer as a current invitation. It is part of the beta's historical record.
How enrollment worked
Participation required FirstLook enrollment with Steam and Discord accounts connected. Every player had to enroll individually. Friends who wanted to play together each needed their own enrollment. An invitation from someone with access was not enough.
This rule caused confusion for groups during the test weekend. The pinned developer FAQ explains it directly for that reason. If one friend could not join, missing enrollment was the most likely cause. Our co-op troubleshooting page covers this in more detail.
Test activation keys belonged only to that beta. They are not the same as cosmetic reward codes, such as the one-use Midnight CatNap skin code sold with official merchandise. That code is meant to be redeemed once the full game is live. Keep test keys and cosmetic codes separate.
What the beta included
The test allowed up to eight players and recommended four for its balance at the time. Only the first four shifts of a run were unlocked. Some puzzles, enemies, playable Critters and lore were deliberately withheld. Recordings from the beta therefore show part of the game, not all of it.
Players collected loot, brought it back to Barry the loot cart, and worked toward a quota. The official tips recommended glowsticks for regrouping and finding Barry. PC Gamer's hands-on report described Miss Delight as a threat during the test. The beta's tutorial also ended with a Boogie Bot.
Several well-known creators recorded the beta, including Thinknoodles in a session with the developers. Sheeprampage's beta video warns that it uses an early build that differs from the final version. That warning applies to all beta footage. Use those videos for context rather than as release guides.
Known issues from the test
The beta announcement listed known issues for that build. Streaming the game from one PC to another through Steam could lose input and break voice chat. Non-Roman characters in usernames were listed as a possible crash condition. A crash related to the tutorial Boogie Bot was also noted.
During the beta, the developer recommended inviting friends through the Steam friends list while the in-game lobby was being tuned. These are historical notes tied to the test build. They should not be treated as confirmed launch bugs. The release build needs to be checked separately.
Feedback from the beta went to the official bug board and Discord, according to the developer FAQ. That feedback shaped the changes announced on October 8. Players who took part helped identify the navigation and tutorial problems. The launch build is meant to respond to them.
What changed after the beta
On October 8, the developer posted Moving Forward Based on Feedback. It acknowledged that first-time players found navigation, exits, quotas and the tutorial confusing. It also discussed multiplayer balance and the retained solo option. The post describes plans, not a finished patch.
Planned changes include an experimental map-type navigation item and clearer quota and exit cues. An exit hatch is meant to open automatically once the quota is met. Sewing kits are intended to revive and syringes are intended to heal. The tutorial is also being reworked.
The post says the game was tuned toward three to five players. It also reports positive responses from groups of six to eight. That explains why the current store page lists one to eight players. Older one-to-four wording comes from earlier marketing.
What comes next
The next official milestone is Steam Early Access on October 21, 2026. That release is a separate product launch, not an extension of beta access. The publisher plans eight Smiling Critters, one starter zone and a core enemy lineup for it. Early Access is expected to last roughly a year.
To play on launch day, wishlist the game on its official Steam page. The price had not been verified at the October 18 check. Confirm it on the store when the game goes live. Your beta participation does not grant ownership of the game.
If Mob Entertainment announces another test, the Steam news page will carry it first. We will update this page with any official dates. Until then, the beta is over and Early Access is the way in. Our release date article has the full timeline.
