Who are the Smiling Critters in Escape from Playtime?

The Smiling Critters are the characters you play as inside the abandoned Playtime Co. factory. The publisher plans an eight-character Smiling Critter roster for the initial Early Access release on October 21, 2026. The beta did not include every Critter, so a beta character-select screen cannot show the full roster or its balance.

Smiling Critters as player characters

In Escape from Playtime, every player controls a Smiling Critter. The official reveal, the Steam description and the reveal trailer all establish this premise. You explore the abandoned Playtime Co. factory as one of these small plush toys. The game's full title in the reveal trailer even calls it A Smiling Critters Adventure.

PC Gamer's preview describes the perspective as playing itsy-bitsy toy animals. Being small changes how you move through a factory built for adults. Traversal and climbing are part of getting around. That scale is central to how the game feels.

The Critters work together to gather building materials for a mysterious Voice. The Voice promises them sanctuary, though its motives are left uncertain. That premise drives every run. Our lore article covers the story background in more detail.

Where the Smiling Critters come from

The official game FAQ identifies the Smiling Critters as a cartoon-inspired plush line. They were introduced in Poppy Playtime Chapter 3. Escape from Playtime brings them into a co-op game of their own. Fans of the series will recognise the group.

The FAQ places Escape from Playtime some time after the Hour of Joy. It describes the Hour of Joy as the toy experiments' rebellion against Playtime Co. employees. That puts the Critters in a factory that has already gone badly wrong. No exact year is given for the game.

Background from the wider series should be kept separate from game mechanics. Knowing a character's history does not tell you how they play. The research found no official link between series lore and in-game abilities. Treat the two as different questions.

The planned eight-character roster

The publisher's plan for the initial Early Access release includes eight Smiling Critter characters. The official reveal and the current Steam description both state this. The roster is described as a starting point, with more characters expected during development. No date was given for additions.

This page does not list the eight characters by name. A complete official roster list was not verified in the research. Naming characters from a beta screen or a trailer would risk getting it wrong. We will add the confirmed list once Early Access launches.

The same plan includes one starter zone and a core enemy lineup. Early Access is targeted to last roughly a year. During that time, the publisher expects to add more characters, zones, features and story. The roster may grow beyond eight.

What the beta showed and left out

The October 1–4 open beta did not include every playable Smiling Critter. The official beta announcement says so directly. It also withheld some puzzles, enemies and lore. The test only unlocked the first four shifts.

That means a character-select screen from the beta cannot establish the full release roster. It also cannot establish character balance for Early Access. Thinknoodles' popular beta recording offers useful context for seeing the Critters in action. Its chapters cover tools, reviving and enemies rather than a roster comparison.

The developer's October 8 feedback post focused on navigation, quotas, exits, the tutorial and item roles. It did not publish a character list or balance changes for the Critters. Those details will need checking in the release build. Beta impressions may not carry over.

The Midnight CatNap cosmetic

Mob Entertainment's official store sells a limited release Midnight CatNap 14-inch plush. Its product page confirms an exclusive Midnight CatNap skin for Escape from Playtime. The skin comes as a unique one-use code. The merchandise FAQ confirms the same details.

The code is emailed separately, normally within one to five business days of purchase. Each plush includes one code, and each code can be redeemed once. The plush does not include the game itself. A separate copy of the Steam game for Windows is required.

According to the merchandise FAQ, the code is redeemed in game through Settings, then Extras, then Redeem Code after your profile loads. Redemption becomes available once the game is live. This has not been tested in a released build for this page. Our CatNap article has the full details.

What is unknown about abilities and unlocks

No verified character-stat table was found for the Smiling Critters. The research did not confirm unique abilities, movement statistics, classes or skills for individual characters. Cosmetic availability, such as the Midnight CatNap skin, is not evidence of special powers. It changes appearance, not performance.

There is also no verified ranked tier list. Any guide naming a best Critter before launch is guessing. The beta did not include the full roster, so comparisons from it are incomplete. We will not publish a ranking without release-build testing.

No unlock progression for characters was verified either. It is not known whether all eight Critters are available from the start. We will add unlock details once Early Access can be checked. Until then, treat unlock guides with caution.

Smiling Critters versus Nightmare Critters

The announced roster is specifically eight Smiling Critters. The official sources reviewed do not announce playable Nightmare Critters. That is a positive statement about the roster, not a promise that Nightmare Critters will never appear. Their role in this game is simply unverified.

Do not label Nightmare Critters as playable based on fan videos or files. The research found no official unlock condition for them. Our Nightmare Critters article explains what is and is not known. It also explains why some evidence was rejected.

As Early Access continues, the publisher expects to add more characters. Which characters those will be has not been announced. We will update both articles as official news arrives. Check the Steam news page for announcements.

Progress, rewards and the Perm-A-Lounge

The Steam description mentions the Perm-A-Lounge computer, where players examine their progress and rewards. It is also where the store says players uncover Playtime Co. secrets. That makes it part of both progression and story. Its full set of functions has not been documented.

Whether character unlocks run through the Perm-A-Lounge has not been verified. The store does not say that Critters are earned there. Assuming so would turn a store description into a mechanic. We will check this once Early Access is playable.

Cosmetics such as the Midnight CatNap skin are redeemed through Settings, then Extras, then Redeem Code, according to the merchandise FAQ. That is a separate route from in-game progress. Keep purchased cosmetics and earned rewards apart when reading guides. They are different systems.
