Why is Escape from Playtime co-op not working?

Check access and build date first. The documented open beta expired on October 4, 2026 at 6 PM PDT, and the main game was still unreleased when this page was checked on October 18. Expired test access cannot be fixed with network tweaks; during the beta, the developer recommended inviting friends through the Steam friends list.

Check whether you still have access

The open beta ran from October 1 at 10 AM PDT to October 4 at 6 PM PDT. The pinned developer FAQ states that the test code and access to that beta build expire at the end of the window. No currently open replacement test was found in the official material reviewed for this page. If you are trying to launch the beta now, that is the most likely reason it fails.

Escape from Playtime itself is planned for Steam Early Access on October 21, 2026. At the October 18 check, the store still said the game was not yet available. If you are trying to play before release, the problem is access rather than your connection or your settings. No fix on your side can change the release date.

No amount of firewall or router changes can bring back an expired test. Wait for the Early Access release or for an official announcement of a new test before troubleshooting further. The Steam news page for the game is the best place to check the latest status. Official announcements there have covered every test so far.

Make sure every friend has access

During the beta, every player needed their own FirstLook enrollment with Steam and Discord accounts connected. A host having access did not make a friend eligible to join. An invitation alone was not enough to get someone into the test. Each person had to complete the enrollment themselves.

This was one of the most likely causes of failed group sessions during the test weekend. If one friend could not join while everyone else could, check that they had enrolled on their own account. The pinned developer FAQ repeats this requirement in plain terms. It was easy to miss for players invited at the last minute.

For Early Access, each player will need the game on their own Steam account once it is purchasable. Any other requirements for the release build should be checked once it is live. Do not assume the beta enrollment rules carry over unchanged. They were specific to the temporary test.

Use Steam friends-list invites

The official beta announcement recommended inviting friends through the Steam friends list. At the time, the in-game lobby was still being tuned by the developer. Steam invites were the suggested route around lobby problems during the test. That advice came directly from Mob Entertainment.

If an in-game invite does not arrive, try sending one through the Steam friends list instead. It is the method the developer documented for that build, so it is the first thing to test. Whether the in-game lobby changes at launch has not been verified. The release build may make this step unnecessary.

Keep in mind that this is a historical recommendation from the test period. Check the current build's guidance after release before relying on it. The developer's Steam news posts are the place to look for updated instructions. We will add any new official advice to this page.

Known streaming and voice chat issue

The beta's known-issues list described a specific problem with streaming the game from one PC to another through Steam. In that setup, players could lose input and voice chat might not work at all. The developer listed it as an issue in the beta build. It was not described as a launch bug.

If you are streaming and teammates cannot hear you, try running the game directly on the machine it is installed on. That is a reasonable diagnostic comparison rather than a guaranteed fix for every setup. It helps you tell a streaming problem apart from a voice settings problem. Once you know which it is, you can troubleshoot the right thing.

Remember that voice in Escape from Playtime is proximity-based, so distance affects what you hear. A teammate who is far away in the factory may simply be out of range. The official FAQ also confirms there is no in-game text chat to fall back on. Check distance before assuming voice is broken.

Usernames and crashes

The developer also listed non-Roman characters in usernames as a possible crash condition in the beta. A crash when joining a session is a different problem from an invite that never arrives. Identify which one you are seeing before changing anything. The fix depends on the symptom.

Changing a display name was a workaround worth considering during that test. It is not an established requirement for the launch build, and nobody should need to rename themselves permanently. Check whether the issue still appears in Early Access before making changes. The developer may fix it before release.

The beta known-issues list also mentioned a crash condition involving the tutorial Boogie Bot. Known issues are always tied to the build they were reported in. They should not be treated as confirmed launch bugs without fresh evidence. Old bug lists age quickly once a game is patched.

Separate the symptoms

Co-op not working can describe several different problems with different causes. You may be unable to enter the game, unable to invite friends, crashing, or unable to hear teammates. Writing down exactly what happens is the first step to fixing it. It also makes any bug report far more useful.

Not being able to enter usually points to access or release status. Invite problems usually point to eligibility or the lobby. Missing voice can come from streaming, distance or audio settings.

The research behind this page did not verify a live server outage, an error-code-specific repair, a firewall port list, a NAT workaround or a reinstall cure. We will not list fixes that have not been confirmed for this game. Be cautious with generic co-op fix videos that are about other titles. Advice that works elsewhere may not apply here.

Report a reproducible bug

The pinned developer FAQ directs feedback to the bug board and the official Discord. A useful report says what happened, how often it happened and on which build. Include whether you were hosting or joining the session. Steps to reproduce the problem are the most valuable detail of all.

Stumpt's open beta gameplay video shows a working multiplayer session from the test period. It is useful historical context, but it contains no connection repair procedure. Its October 7 upload date also does not mean the beta reopened. Videos are often published days after recording.

Once Early Access launches on October 21, 2026, we will check co-op behaviour in the release build. If you find a fix that works consistently, send it through our contact page with your build and setup. Verified fixes will be added here with credit if you want it. Unverified ones will stay off the page.
